# As for now, 3 main parties are being closely watched in the elections:
🔻The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is the most popular party in Pakistan and the former ruling party, centered around former PM Imran Khan, who is wildly popular among Pakistanis but was ousted from power last year after falling out of favor with the country's military, which holds immense political power behind the scenes.
🔻The Pakistan Muslim League-Noon (PML-N) is a centrist party led by former PM Nawaz Sharif, who has also previously fallen out of favor with the country's military and faced arrests and subsequent exile. The party is the second-most popular party in Pakistan and has a powerful support base in the country's most populous province, Punjab. It led the way in ousting former PM Imran Khan in a no-confidence motion in 2022. While the party has been praised for its past economic and developmental achievements, it has also faced charges of corruption as well.
🔻The Pakistan People's Party (PPP) is a left-wing political party currently led by Bilawal Bhutto, the scion of the prominent Bhutto political dynasty. However, the party's reputation is marred by its extreme corruption (even by Pakistani standards) and a failure to develop the Sindh province, where it has held power for decades.
Other smaller parties are contesting the elections as well in the hopes of securing enough seats to gain influence in any future ruling government (their support will be important, as no single party has ever been able to form a government on its own in the past).
The elections will determine the future of one of the most populous countries in the world and the only nuclear-armed Muslim state.
